Pruning Sustainably with Accomplished Tree Management

Updated: Mar 31

Accomplished Tree Management provides service that goes beyond just a trim when they help prune your trees.

There are many reasons why trees need pruning. While we may imagine it's to help keep the shape of the crown, the most important reason is actually safety. A dead branch that is barely hanging can fall any time. It can endanger passersby and damage the infrastructure or building around it.

Pruning can also feel like a fresh start for your trees. Find out the reasons why pruning is beneficial here:

Before we go any further, please remember that pruning requires skills, knowledge and expertise. It's not a secure activity to attempt on your own, no matter how innocuous the tree looks. Please get the services of a qualified and insured arborist.

Also, if your trees are pruned by someone who is inexperienced, you may well damage the trees and stunt its growth. This is not the most sustainable option for the longevity of your greenery.

When to prune

Unless it is due to emergency reasons, pruning is best done when the tree is dormant. This is because trees feel stress just like we do, and removing parts of it does create a reaction in the tree. When the tree is dormant, we can help reduce the stress of pruning. Again, a qualified and certified arborist can best advise you when is the best time to prune depending on the type of tree you have, as they all have their own unique characteristics.

Service that goes beyond pruning

Recently, we did a bit of pruning for one of our clients in Port Macquarie. We've provided our services to Veronica and Ray Lind before, so we know their greenery well and what they need for the property they are on.

Their trees have certainly gotten a bit of a growth spurt so it was the time of the year to give the trees a good pruning. When trees get big, they may start to block the view you have around you. We got down to pruning these trees so Veronica and Ray can have a better view.

"Rhys didn't just cut. He advised me and our affected neighbour how the trees should be trimmed so that we could have a good view for a long time, as well as a healthy top crown as the trees grow. Also, because we live near the sea, Rhys told us the sea salt actually weakens the top of the trees. He went beyond to give us useful tips on how to keep our trees going and healthy for a long time. It's great service with sustainability thrown in." - Veronica Lind

We are passionate about trees and Nature. When we take on a project, we want to make sure we achieve not just the client's objective, but to ensure the work we have done has long-lasting effects. You could say we like empowering the trees to last for a long time. Sharing our knowledge and experience with clients is key to ensuring the trees are well taken care of. We've met so many clients who are actually very eager to learn more and build up their knowledge of trees!

Safety measures for pruning

Safety is key in our line of work. Our arborists are fully qualified and we perform hazard identification checks before we start on a project. We adhere to the Australian standards of AS 4373-2007-Pruning of Amenity Trees and we are a registered user of the Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) method. We are also fully insured with $20 million Public Liability and $5 million Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Our Qualifications include:

  • AQF 2 Arboriculture

  • AQF 3 Arboriculture

  • AQF 5 Arboriculture

  • All our pruning and climbing techniques are AS 4373-2007 Pruning of Amenity Trees compliant.

  • Reports on development sites are compliant with Australian Standard AS4970-2009 (Protection of Trees on Development Sites)

  • Registered user of Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) Method

When we have a pruning project on our hands, we take into account the following points:

  1. We avoid pruning on windy and rainy days. If the elements of nature are not in our favour, we do not endanger our arborists by working on trees.

  2. We cordon off the area we are working on so the people around know not to enter. This would be an area of ground that is approximately two times the tree's height.

  3. We check the area for signs of bees, wasps or other possible animal hazards before we start work.

  4. We wear the necessary protective clothing such as helmets, goggles, chainsaw trousers and safety boots.

  5. We have all the necessary tools needed to perform the job, and we are all trained and experienced in using them safely and efficiently. These may include climbing spurs, harnesses, saddles, climbing lines, chainsaws, pole saws, tubular saws, long pruners, ladders and ropes.

  6. We have a first-aid kit on us when we go out to work on a project so we are always prepared for emergencies.

Ensuring safety for our arborists means we can continue to perform our work and offer our services for a long time to come.

A kind thought

If you require some pruning on your property, it is a good idea to inform your neighbours living close to you so they are aware some arborists are coming around at a certain time and the work may cause some loud noises for a period of time. It is a consideration that neighbours appreciate, and they may even get curious and want to get a few tips on whether their trees need a trim too!
